The Selby District Council is located next to the police station on Portholme Road. Parking is available; however, in order to exit, you must get a parking token from the front desk. The Department of Refuge has been put up for sale. The Benefits and Council Tax divisions were recently relocated to Market Lane's new Council facility. The remaining departments—Building Control, Environmental Health, Licencing, and Planning—now function out of the Portholme building. Regarding what will happen to the building, there is some uncertainty. Planning approval was denied despite conversations concerning the council's desire to sell the building to Tesco, which is located next door. Additionally stationed at the Portholme location is the dog warden.
